My Current Setup (for anything guitar, bass, and drums)
I play guitar and sing as a “trio” with a drum and bass track programmed into a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation or a digital studio). I use Ableton. I usually record live when setup this way.
Why the different genres?
In 2025 I released 8 albums: Post punk from 1984/85, Techno (chill) written in 2022/23, solo piano written in 2024, alt rock written in 2024/25, adult contemporary written in 2025 ....
Well, the post punk was from my younger days, unreleased music until 2025.
Back then I played guitar. Life happened and I stopped playing, decades later when I started creating music again I couldn't play guitar anymore, or keyboard for that matter, so I created music without those skills - thus the chill music.
Then I started playing keyboard. That eventually led to the solo piano album.
Then I relearned guitar. I bought an acoustic guitar in Sept of 2022, and that led to to writing songs with a guitar – and two years later, the albums Internet Monster and Maybe Bliss were written.
I also wanted to explore what was possible a bit more, and I was enticed by the idea of making a crooner styled EP. It was partly an attempt to try something really different, to stretch boundaries a bit, and to have some fun. I did have fun. But, I do love my guitar music ....
My new single - Vegetation on Mars Live, is now released (Feb 6/2026), and, I'm back to rocking guitar!
I Want To Be Your Phone is another single planned for release March 20, 2026 … more guitar!
And, I am now working on another guitar based album…
A bass line, a drum line and me ...
Usually recorded live ....
Vegetation on Mars Live
Listen to the song, then watch the video of the actual recording of the song on my youtube (@maybebliss) channel (go to Videos tab). Then listen to the old version from 1984 for comparison (from my album Clever).
As a kid, I was a total space nerd. I was fascinated by space travel and by what near-future science might make possible. I read a lot of Asimov and other science fiction about planet terraforming, much of which made it sound like—using today’s technology, or in the near future—we could actually do it.
So, as a younger person, I thought, “Heck, we’ve got to terraform Mars!”
I wrote this in 1984, at the ripe old age of 23. Then, I had a wall full of equipment to play and record, and now, I literally use a laptop to play and a desktop to record. I looked at all my old songs and wanted to resurrect one to see how it would translate to my current process. I play guitar/sing with a drum and base track I program in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation or a digital studio). I usually record live.
I have recently upgraded my practise/recording environment. And this has allowed me to record in a less restricted way and this song seemed a good candidate for a trial run.
Vegetation on Mars will come from Earth!
